Terrier Clarke targets next level

Peter Clarke believes moving from Southend United to Huddersfield Town will take his career to a higher level.

The 27-year-old defender signed in June on a free transfer and told BBC Radio Leeds that money was not the reason for his move to Huddersfield.

"As a professional sports person you want to play at the highest level you possibly can," he said.

"That's my main ambition and I believe this club is in a better position to make the transition to the next level."

Clarke started his career at Everton as a trainee before having loan spells at Blackpool, Port Vale and Coventry.

The defender signed for Southend in 2006 after spending two years at Blackpool. He made 145 appearances for the Shrimpers, scoring 11 goals.

"I heard towards the end of last season that there may have been some interest [from Huddersfield] and was obviously pleased," he added.

"I met the manager [Lee Clark] and [assistant] Terry McDermott and we had a good hour's conversation about what they were hoping for from the coming season, the club and the future.

"I gave them my views on one or two things and hopefully we all went away very happy.

"We then met again and I had a look around the place. Having played here on numerous occasions it's a fantastic venue to play your football in.

"I looked at the facilities and obviously liked what I saw."
