Hibernian defender Sol Bamba transferred to Leicester

Leicester City have completed the signing of defender Sol Bamba from Hibernian for an undisclosed fee.

He is therefore reunited with Sven-Goran Eriksson, who was his head coach with Ivory Coast but dropped the 25-year-old during the World Cup finals.

Hibs manager Colin Calderwood said ahead of the transfer being finalised: "It's a good deal for the club.

"We had a bid from Leicester and, subject to him agreeing terms, we've given him permission to go down there."

Subject to international transfer clearance being finalised, Bamba could be involved for the first time for the Foxes against Swansea City in Monday's Championship match at the Walkers Stadium.

The centre-half, who joined Hibs from Dunfermline Athletic in 2008, was due to be out of contract at Easter Road in the summer and had expressed a desire to play in English football.

He had been left out of the Hibs squad for the New Year's Day Edinburgh derby defeat by Hearts while undergoing a medical and contract talks.

And it meant that Wednesday's 2-2 draw with Dundee United, when Bamba was to blame for the visitors' opening goal before Hibs staged a two-goal fightback, turned out to be the defender's last game for for the Easter Road outfit.

Bamba had been transferred to Hibs following two years with Dunfermline, having started his career with Paris Saint-Germain after failing to break into the French top-flight club's first team.

Before joining Hibs, Bamba appeared close to a move to Championship club Watford, spending a trial spell at Vicarage Road and thereafter being linked with Fulham and Rennes.

Bamba has become a regular in the Ivory Coast squad since being chosen for the 2008 Olympic Games.

However, he lost his starting place under Eriksson at the World Cup in South Africa, after which the Swede was appointed manager at Leicester.

Bamba was ordered to train with Hibs' youth team by manager John Hughes after returning to Easter Road later than expected following his summer international commitments.

Hughes has since been succeeded by Calderwood, who has now lost a key member of his defence despite Hibs losing seven and winning only two of their 11 games since he took charge.

The former Newcastle United assistant told BBC Scotland that he is likely to be given funds to strengthen his squad during January.
