Turner condemns Stockport ruling

Turner feels lower league clubs need a financial reality check

Hereford chairman Graham Turner has condemned the ruling that has allowed Stockport County to stay in League One, despite going into administration.

The Hatters were deducted 10 points by the Football League but are safe from the threat of relegation.

"Clearly the people who run the club couldn't afford to sustain the expenditure," Turner told BBC Hereford & Worcester.

"Clubs that go into administration should be automatically relegated."

The Bulls chairman, who recently stood down as manager at Edgar Street in favour of head coach John Trewick, feels the 10-point deduction is not a strong enough deterrent.

Somewhere along the line we have got to be realistic about what we can afford to spend

While Hereford finished bottom of League One, their annual accounts were in the black for a fifth successive year and Turner feels they have effectively been punished for running a tight ship.

"Clubs like ours that run within their means are disadvantaged as the reason we have gone down is that we didn't spend money we hadn't got on better quality players," he said.

"I see other clubs that do spend money on players they can't afford and ultimately it catches up with them.

"Yet they can almost wipe off the debts and start again in the same division and that bugs me a little bit.

Turner pointed out that he has no problem with Stockport manager Jim Gannon, who he believes has done a magnificent job in the transfer market.

But he added: "They will take the First Division central funding for next season which gives them a decent amount of money.

"I know there is a quest for success and the pressure to bring in that extra player and pay that extra transfer fee, but somewhere along the line we have got to be realistic about what we can afford to spend.

"We had ours 14 years ago and you learn from that lesson that you have to live within your means."
