Moyes orders Everton improvement

Moyes was disappointed with Everton's performance
Everton boss David Moyes concedes his side must make a massive improvement to reach the Uefa Cup quarter-finals after a disappointing loss to Fiorentina.

The Italians take a 2-0 lead into next week's second leg at Goodison Park.

Moyes said: "We now have a big job to do. They are a good team and on this performance we need to do much better.

"The performance was not good. I think we didn't start the game well and we gave the initiative to Fiorentina. They played well throughout."

Moyes, whose side conceded two late goals, added: "Early on they had a couple of shots against us as a warning. We should have defended their crosses and not given the midfield players the chance to get shots away.

"Some players, in fact the majority, didn't play to their potential. We've another game and hopefully we can do better."

Everton captain Phil Neville was also disappointed that the side under-performed, saying: "We just didn't play at all tonight, we were a little bit negative in the way we played.

"The manager set us out to attack but we were too cautious and we just didn't get enough men forward."

Everton's run of six games without defeat came to an end in the Stadio Artemio Franchi but Neville still believes they can progress to the quarter-finals.

"It is always a letdown when you don't play as well as you can but we have to put it behind us," added Neville.

"We are still in this tie going back to Goodison Park next week - the atmosphere will be better than it was here.

"We know we have to go into the game and play at a higher tempo, put them under pressure and play how Everton can play."
