Crewe boss expects transfer glut

Gudjon Thordarson
Thordason is not prepared to rush into making new signings

Crewe Alexandra manager Gudjon Thordarson says he is expecting there will be a flood of players in the transfer market this summer.

He told BBC Radio Stoke: "Loads of players will be released now and there will be a big market of available, transfer-free players.

"Come the end of June there will be a lot who have failed to secure deals at their preferred clubs.

"My job is to pick the right ones for their character and their ability."

But Thordarson confirmed that due to his side's relegation to League Two next season he may also find it difficult to attract his first-choice targets.

"The harsh reality will sink in when they (the players) have to look at what they think is their second-best chance.

"And it's the same for me, I might not get all the signings I'm after but I've got to be comfortable with the signings I make."

Crewe have allowed 10 players to leave the club following their relegation.

Thordarson will be hoping to have the majority of their squad in place for pre-season, of which details are still being finalised.

A pre-season trip to Austria is on the cards whilst Wigan will visit the Alexandra Stadium in July.
