Relieved Coleman bemoans 'agony'

Coventry manager Chris Coleman insisted Sunday's 4-1 defeat at Charlton was the worst day of his career - despite the club narrowly avoiding relegation.

Leicester went down after a 0-0 draw at Stoke but a late goal by their Midlands rivals would have seen Coventry drop.

"It was agony," he said. "I never want to experience that again."

"I'm delighted we have stayed up but not in the fashion we did. The players weren't celebrating in the dressing room. None of us were."

Colemen replaced Iain Dowie as Coventry manager in February, with the club lying 20th, but he has been unable to turn around the team's poor form which continued right into the last day of the season.

"I believe Leicester hit the post and the bar and that's how close we have come to slipping out of the league," he said.

"I'm relieved. We have been in a relegation battle for three or four months and now it is finally over.

"But that's not the way to secure your place in the Championship with a 4-1 defeat."

The former Fulham boss signed a three-and-a-half year deal with the club after leaving Real Sociedad in January and says he now must undertake a big shake-up at the Ricoh Stadium.

"I felt sorry for the fans. Our away support has been amazing but that wasn't the way to thank them.

"I am delighted to be staying up, don't get me wrong, but I have a lot of hard thinking to do now."
