Paul Lambert has been named as the new manager of Colchester United.

The former Wycombe Wanderers boss succeeds Geraint Williams at the League One club following his departure by mutual consent last month.

The U's are currently 20th in the division and are yet to win at their new Community Stadium home.

Former Celtic midfielder Lambert, 39, told BBC Essex: "The place is vibrant and it's up to me and the players to go and win football matches."

He added: "There's really a country mile to go and they haven't been playing badly, they just haven't got the results."

The U's have struggled since being relegated from the Championship at the end of last season, but Lambert said they should aspire towards making a quick return.

"I don't want to come here and sit in mid-table or anything like that, I want to try and get out of the league," he said.

"It's going to be really tough, but every other team in the league want to do the same and we're certainly no different."

Lambert left Wycombe in May after leading the club to the League Two play-off semi-finals last season.

He will travel with the Colchester squad for Saturday's League One match with Cheltenham, although former Wales international Kit Symons, who has been caretaker manager while the club sought a replacement for fellow Welshman Williams, will take charge of team affairs for one final time.

As a player Lambert won 40 caps for Scotland and had spells with Celtic, St Mirren, Motherwell and Borussia Dortmund.
