Colchester boss in transfer talks

Colchester United manager Steve Whitton is hoping to bolster his squad with two new signings at Layer Road.

Whitton, fresh from an official Fifa coaching course, is back at the Essex club and looking to add to his squad in time for pre-season training.

Out-of-contract Port Vale midfielder Tommy Widdrington has confirmed he is due to meet Whitton to discuss a move.

Whitton is also chasing Northampton's Irish winger Dave Savage, who's deal at Sixfields expired recently.

I am hoping to speak to him next week

The U's boss told the Evening Gazette: "The player is a free agent and the kind of hard-working central midfielder I am looking for.

"Those fans who watched our away game at Northampton last season will remember it was Savage who ran us ragged and was instrumental in our two-goal defeat.

"I am hoping to speak to him next week."

Savage has five full caps for the Republic of Ireland and moved to Northampton from Millwall in 1998.

Several clubs are tracking free agent Savage but former Cobblers team-mate Andy Woodman's presence at Layer Road could tip the scales in Colchester's favour.

The majority of last season's squad who were out of contract have penned new deals.

Frenchman Thomas Pinault has signed, as has former Spurs 'keeper Simon Brown. Full-back Joe Keith and former skipper David Gregory have agreed monthly deals.

Aaron Skelton's future is yet to be resolved and Steve McGavin has yet to sign the deal offered to him.

Whitton has set a deadline for players to respond to contract offers and turn-up for pre-season training or he will "assume they no longer want to play for the club."
