Clyde give McLaren fresh chance

Clyde have signed former Airdrie United and St Johnstone winger Willie McLaren, the sixth player to be secured by manager John Brown within 24 hours.

The 23-year-old was bought by St Johnstone from Airdrie in August 2006 but was released in January this year.

Brown told his club website: "I know all about his reputation, but we've all got baggage.

"On ability, he will do a job for us. He's been fine while he's been here and he's worked hard on his fitness."

Brown hoped that McLaren, who has a reputation for a troubled private life, would seize the opportunity to resurrect his career.

"If this is his last chance then it's a great opportunity for him to prove people wrong," said the Clyde boss.

"Everyone has their own character and players mature at different times.

"He's been on bigger money, but now he is on the minimum and he has to prove himself again."

McLaren was signed after impressing on trial, while midfielders Billy Gibson and Marvyn Wilson did enough to win contract extensions.

The 26-year-old Gibson, whom Brown signed when he took charge in January, has been given a new two-year deal, while veteran Wilson, 34, will be at Broadwood for at least another season.

Brown had earlier signed Ricky Waddell from Airdrie and Marc McCusker from Hearts, while he again raided Queen's Park to sign Alan Trouten, having previously captured Stuart Kettlewell.

"When I came into the club, I felt that we didn't have a lot of flair in the final third or much creativity from the wide areas," said the manager.

"People like Willie McLaren, Alan Trouten and Ricky Waddell will give us that.

"I want us to play attractive football and if that doesn't happen in a particular match then we'll still be a hungry team that doesn't give up.

"Both McLaren and Waddell also give us options on the left and give the squad a bit of balance that was lacking."

Brown is still in talks with other out-of-contract players and is hoping to cast an eye over more trialists.

One is expected to arrive from Germany on the recommendation of veteran former Rangers midfielder Jorg Albertz, who helped Clyde survive their relegation battle in Division One.

However, Brown has released the majority of his under-19 squad.

Only midfielders Stephen Connolly and Jordan Murch have been retained.
