Whalley takes on new Chester role

Eric Whalley
Whalley was Accrington chairman from 1995 until last month

Chester City have named ex-Accrington Stanley chairman Eric Whalley as their new director of football.

Whalley takes up the role at the Deva Stadium following a 14-year stint as owner and chairman at Accrington.

"My passion is sport, and football is the biggest passion in my life," Whalley told BBC Radio Merseyside.

"Hopefully I can help Chester to success again. Knowing Stephen Vaughan like I do, I thought it was the right time to move."

Whalley added: "I spoke to Stephen and decided to go along and hopefully help Chester get back into the Football League.

"I have been offered a few positions in non-league, but I think Chester, with a nice stadium, nice playing surface and good hospitality, is the ideal place - certainly for me."

As director of football, Whalley will work alongside manager Mick Wadsworth, who joined the club last month as successor to Mark Wright.

City, meanwhile, are still awaiting acceptance of their membership of the Football Association after that status was removed by the FA last week.

The FA has concerns over the set-up of chairman Vaughan's new company but it is understood the matter will move on a stage on Monday.

Refresh Recovery, City's administrators, will attempt to resolve one of the stumbling blocks in court with representatives of HM Revenue and Customs.
