Mutu completes Chelsea switch
Adrian Mutu

Adrian Mutu has completed his move from Parma to Chelsea with the Romanian waiting only for his work permit.

The 24-year-old passed a medical on Tuesday, completing the formalities of his 15.8m move.

Mutu has signed a five-year deal and Chelsea are confident his work permit application will be approved.

Chief executive Trevor Birch even predicted the striker could face Liverpool in the opening game of the season.

Birch told the club's official website: "A work permit for a player of his pedigree should not take too long and I would not be surprised if he is available to face Liverpool on Sunday."

Mutu is the newest recruit to Roman Abramovich's Chelsea revolution and his transfer takes Abramovich's spending to almost 75m.

Mutu revealed he was swayed after talking to his friend and former Blues defender Dan Petrescu.

The 24-year-old Romanian playmaker earlier said: "Dan talked about Chelsea in a good way and I couldn't refuse the offer they made me.

"I asked my club to consider it and I have to thank the officials.

"After practically launching me they have now given me the possibility to go to England.

"From a human point of view it hasn't been an easy choice. But now it's done so let's think of Chelsea."

The 24-year-old is regarded as one of the hottest properties in Italian football.

He began his career at Arges Pitesti before moving to Romanian giants Dinamo Bucharest.

He was brought to Italy by Inter Milan, and then moved to Verona before joining Parma last August.

Parma coach Cesare Prandelli said: "He was the best player in Italy last year and he has all the qualities to be a great player in the Premiership.

"He's got an exceptional left foot and at 24 he can go on to be a top-class player."
