Celtic midfielder Barry Robson says manager Gordon Strachan's decision to leave the club is "a bit baffling".

Robson was signed by Strachan in January 2008 and was a key part of Celtic's surge for the title last year.

The former Dundee United man said: "It seems strange that someone should leave when they have lost just one title. It's frustrating and disappointing.

"All the players got on great with him. He has improved me as a player. He is going to be sadly missed."

On Thursday, Celtic chairman John Reid said the club would take its time over appointing Strachan's successor, with Owen Coyle, Slaven Bilic, Mark McGhee and Tony Mowbray among those tipped for the post.

And Robson listed a couple of essential attributes that prospective candidates should possess.

"He'll need a big personality and he'll need to be strong," said the 30-year-old midfielder.

"Whoever it is, they will do a fantastic job because they're going to inherit some really good players and a great base, a great stadium and great fans.

"The club is in a fine way at the moment so all we need is a top manager to come in to make sure we lift the title next season.

"The club is run very smoothly and any manager would love to come and manage this football club."

Robson was speaking at a media conference to promote the Tommy Burns Tribute Match on Sunday.

Burns, a former Celtic player and manager, lost his battle with cancer a year ago, dying at the age of 51.

Robson said: "He was a special man and I'm proud to be speaking about him today because he's a massive part of this football club and he always will be.

"He touched so many lives in different ways. It'll be a special day for everyone."
