McDonald in new Celtic deal talks

Celtic striker Scott McDonald poses with the SPL trophy

Striker Scott McDonald has begun talks with Celtic over extending his contract with the Scottish champions.

McDonald was delighted to cap a great first campaign at Celtic Park with a championship medal.

"My agent, Lou Sticca, flew from Australia for talks with Peter Lawwell last week," said the striker, who netted 31 goals during the season.

"He told me that things had gone well, but I said I didn't want to know any of the details."

The 24-year-old McDonald was signed from Motherwell at the end of last season for 700,000.

"I wanted to concentrate on our match against Dundee United and winning the title. Everything else could wait," said the Australian.

"Now that we've won it, it's the most incredible feeling I've experienced, and I want more of this.

"That's why I'm so thrilled at the prospect of signing a new deal and making sure I've got a few more years of winning trophies for Celtic in front of me.

"This is my first title and it's very special for me.

"But some of the others said it was the most memorable for them and one that they will be talking about 20 years down the line."

McDonald also expressed his pleasure that manager Gordon Strachan had secured his third consecutive title after his side came from seven points behind Rangers six weeks ago to triumph on the final day.

"Maybe a few people are eating some humble pie right now," he said.

"The players all came out and supported the gaffer and we know how lucky we are to have him here and long may that continue.

"The gaffer wasn't affected by it all. It's not the first time he has come under heavy criticism as a manager or when he was a player.

"When you come to a club like this, you have to deal with it. Those are just the pressures of playing in Glasgow.

"But he never stopped believing in his players. Over that period, there weren't many changes made to the team.

"He had full belief and confidence in the players and not for one minute did that change and that is one of the reasons we won the title."

Meanwhile, midfielder Shunsuke Nakamura is also ready to remain at Celtic.

The Japanese 29-year-old, who will represent his country in the Kirin Cup, has finished his three-year contract, but Celtic have an option for another 12 months.

"It is a big thing for me that we have gone straight into the Champions League," said Nakamura.

"Because we don't have to qualify, I can get maybe two more weeks off.

"I didn't get a proper break last year when we had a qualifier and had to report back to the club earlier than usual. So I think I will be at Celtic for one more season."
