Magpies reject Carlisle Krul bid

Newcastle have rejected Carlisle's request to sign goalkeeper Tim Krul on loan until the end of the season.

Krul, 20, joined the Cumbrians on an initial one-month loan in November which was then extended until January.

"Obviously they have their own goalkeeping situation to look at, and we have to respect that," said Carlisle manager Greg Abbott.

"We will keep a very close eye on it and should things change, we can perhaps talk to them again."

Joining Carlisle was a first taste of regular football for Dutchman Krul, who admitted he had enjoyed his spell with the League One club.

"I expected that it was going to be good here but the last nine games have been honestly more than just fun, it has been really good," said Krul.

The Dutch under-21 international, who joined Newcastle in July 2005 from ADO Den Haag, is currently third choice goalkeeper behind Shay Given and Steve Harper at St James' Park.

Former Crewe Alexandra goalkeeper Ben Williams is likely to return to the Carlisle side for the trip to Tranmere on Saturday.

Meanwhile Carlisle drew 1-1 against a Newcastle side that included Steven Taylor, Joey Barton and trialist Peter Lovenkrands in a behind-closed-doors friendly on Tuesday.

Joe Anyinsah put the Cumbrians ahead in the first half, only for Taylor to equalise for the Premier League side.
