Jay Bothroyd calls for Cardiff City caution

Cardiff signed Bothroyd for a cut-price 300,000 from Wolves in 2008

Jay Bothroyd has warned Cardiff fans not to get carried away after the 4-0 win at Leeds put the club level on points with Championship leaders QPR.

The 11-goal top scorer fired a double as the Bluebirds crushed Leeds at Elland Road to secure their fourth successive league triumph.

But Bothroyd sounded a note of caution even though Cardiff have been widely tipped for Premier League promotion.

"There's a very long way to go as we're not even in November," said Bothroyd.

The 28-year-old has suffered his fair share of false dawns since arriving in south Wales from Wolverhampton Wanderers for a bargain £300,000 in 2008.

Cardiff missed out on a play-off place by only one goal in Bothroyd's first season with the Bluebirds and in the 2009-10 campaign he suffered the heartbreak of losing the Championship play-off final to Blackpool.

So despite joining early-season leaders QPR on 29 points, Bothroyd is not celebrating - even though Cardiff boast a star-studded squad that has been admired by rival managers and pundits alike.

And captain Craig Bellamy insisted their 4-0 thrashing of Leeds - Cardiff's fifth successive triumph over the famous Elland Road club - fired a warning to their Championship rivals live on television.

But Bothroyd warned: "We're not getting carried away like Cardiff have in the past.

"There are a lot of games to be played so we must take it step by step.

"We earned the right to beat Leeds and we must not forget that. If it looked easy, it was because we made it looked easy.

"I am pleased that goals are coming but I'm just glad to be doing my job for the team."
