Jay Bothroyd injury cost us - Mark Hudson

Cardiff are left devastated after their play-off loss at Wembley
Cardiff are left devastated after their play-off loss at Wembley

Captain Mark Hudson says the early loss of Jay Bothroyd was a huge blow in Cardiff's 3-2 Championship play-off final defeat to Blackpool at Wembley.

"Jay's a great player, if he's not in the team we just have to deal with it - but maybe we didn't," said Hudson.

"Knowing we could create chances but failed to shut up shop at the back... we had a go in the second half but it just wasn't enough.

"I'm gutted, it's so disappointing - but good luck to Blackpool."

Manager Dave Jones added: "Losing Jay was a massive blow for us, but we got in front again - we just didn't keep that lead.

"You want to rip into one or two. It's not the time and not the place. Everybody's really down.

"You've just got to take it on the chin. Well done to Ollie [Blackpool boss Ian Holloway], well done to his players."

I hope we can do it again next season, but we're just so deflated

Cardiff took the lead after just nine minutes, but the Tangerines soon equalised before striker Bothroyd departed with a calf problem in the 15th minute.

The Bluebirds went back ahead on 37 minutes, but again the lead lasted less than four minutes and they went 3-2 down in first-half injury time.

"I was struggling with a calf problem, but I'd trained all week," Bothroyd told BBC Sport Wales.

"I just felt it go again and couldn't carry on.

"It's so disappointing, to come all this way and lose on the last day of the season - it's heartbreaking.

"I hope we can do it again next season, but we're just so deflated."

The future for cash-strapped Cardiff will now be difficult, having missed out on the estimated £90m that comes with Premier League promotion.

The club have already survived four winding-up orders as Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs demand repayment of a £1.9m debt.

The club's total debt is estimated at £15m, with new Malaysian investors said to be set to step in before a fifth trip to the High Court.

Dave Jones has been courted by other teams, Wales midfielder Joe Ledley is out of contract in the summer and other star players like Bothroyd are sure to be targeted by Premier clubs.

"We should have been better than we were and we have to bounce back, there's nothing else you can do," Jones told BBC Sport Wales.

"There are too many teams who have come here before. You've got two choices - we can either sulk about it, we didn't sulk last year, and we can't sulk this year.

"We've just got to make sure we get the players that on occasions can do the job for us.

"It's not the time for all that now. We're just going to go home and reflect on everything that's gone on this year.

"I'm on holiday this week and I'll have a chat with the board and go on from there and at the moment I haven't even thought about anything like that.

"You just reflect on where you've gone wrong, how you could have been better, but we just have to say well done to Blackpool and we have to just take it on the chin."

Centre-back Hudson added: "I hope we can keep as many bodies as possible together, have a good summer, a good break, and look forward to next season.

"It's vital that Dave Jones stays, he's the one who has driven us here and hopefully we can do it again next season."
