Portsmouth have made an enquiry about Cardiff striker Ross McCormack.

The Bluebirds say no bid has been made for the Scotland international who is faces competition for a starting place from new arrival Michael Chopra.

McCormack was last season's top scorer with 23 goals after joining from 12 months ago from Motherwell for £130,000.

Hull City are also said to be interested in the 22-year-old who signed a new four-year deal this month.

McCormack has told Cardiff chairman Peter Risdale he wants a move over concerns he will be sidelined to ensure he protects his Scotland future.

"I had a chat with the chairman," said McCormack. "It doesn't look as if I'm going to be playing - if it continues that way then I would look to obviously get out.

"Scotland have got a World Cup campaign coming up and it's imperative that I'm playing and if I'm not playing then I would obviously ask to leave."

Last Thursday, chairman Peter Ridsdale said: "Ross has indicated that were another club to come in for his services, he would like to leave."

But McCormack denies that amounted to an official transfer request. Asked by BBC Sport Wales if he had made an official transfer request, he replied: "No.

McCormack's rivals for a spot up front for the coming Championship season are Chopra, Jay Bothroyd and Paul Parry.

The Scotsman found himself the centre of attention as Cardiff drew 0-0 at Swindon on Saturday in a pre-season friendly.

He was booed by some Cardiff fans, but says support came from others.

"It was expected over the events over the past few days. I was expecting a bit of jeering and what have you, but to be fair to a large number of fans as well they supported me and sang my name which was good."

McCormack has also in the past admitted he would be tempted by a move to Scottish Premier League giants Celtic.

However, he is unhappy news of his feelings over his future at the club became public knowledge, sparking ill-feeling from some Cardiff fans.

He said: "Someone's released it. Only a few people knew about it and it's disappointing because the fans have been behind me all along all last season and the start of the season.

"And it's turned a few of them against me which is annoying. It's not what I wanted.

"It's every boy's dream to play in the Premier League, but right now the focus is on me.

"I want to be playing and if I'm not playing at Cardiff then obviously I'm going to have to look to address that.

"I want to stay in the Scotland team. I'm 22-years-old and I don't want to be sitting on benches.

"The thing is if I go to the Premier League I could sit on the bench as well so I don't know what's going to happen.

"Any Premier League side would interest anyone, but at this moment in time I'm a Cardiff City player and want to give my all to the club.

McCormack signed a new four-year contract earlier this month and on Thursday Ridsdale said: "I'm surprised particularly because it was only three weeks ago Ross signed a new lucrative four-year contract.

"But let me make it absolutely clear so that it's unequivocal that Ross McCormack is contracted to Cardiff City for four years.

"He would command a fee in our view that clearly is a high fee if he were to leave.

"That fee will not be reduced because of the events that Ross has suggested he may want to go."

This summer Cardiff have lost defender Roger Johnson, who joined Birmingham for £5m, and there are doubts over the future of captain Joe Ledley, who has a year to run on his contract, but has yet to commit to a new deal.
