Barry quiet on Cambridge future

Barry has taken the role of interim chairman following Rolls' departure

Cambridge United majority shareholder Paul Barry has refused to clarify his future intentions, despite reappointing Martin Ling as manager.

Former chairman George Rolls, who resigned last Wednesday, suggested earlier this week that Barry was looking to sell his shares in the club.

However US-based Barry told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire: "A lot of people know me from my days growing up here.

"All I can say is that I'll always be a Cambridge United fan."

Rolls resigned following the departure of Ling after just nine days at the helm, but has since claimed that Barry has been looking to quit the Abbey.

We'll be reviewing the chairman role as we go forward, but interim means interim

Barry took over as interim chairman following Rolls' departure with vice-chairman Terry Baker also standing down from the board.

Former Leyton Orient boss Ling was believed to be unhappy with a selection process which saw both him and Ebbsfleet boss Liam Daish offered the U's job.

Rolls admitted the breakdown in communication between himself and Ling cost him his job as chairman - especially given previous boss Gary Brabin was sacked in similar circumstances.

"You can't lose another manager after nine days and I accept that," he told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire last week.

However Rolls has not ruled out returning to the Cambridge board in the future.

He claimed confusion over the appointment of Ling was down to disagreements over whether the club could afford to take him on and has cast doubt over the club's financial health.

"In terms of his CV Martin Ling was the first choice, but financially it made no sense to appoint him," he said.
