U's squad stunned by Brabin exit

Caretaker Cambridge United boss Paul Carden says the squad was hugely disappointed to learn manager Gary Brabin had been sacked.

Brabin was relieved of his duties on Monday after just a year at the club.

Carden told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire: "I've never seen such a downbeat dressing room after a manager getting the sack.

"He had earned the respect of the players with the way he treated people and the way he conducted himself."

The U's board have cited disagreements over the size of the club's playing budget as the reason behind Brabin's departure.

Carden, 30, was responsible for bringing Brabin to the Abbey Stadium in the summer of 2008 and worked as assistant player-manager last season.

He had been working as a mediator between chairman George Rolls and Brabin over the past few months, but said he still did not expect his friend to be fired.

"I knew there had been one or two issues over the past two months, but I didn't see it coming when it did," he said.

Brabin and Carden worked as a team during their time at the Abbey and Carden said he would give careful thought to his future.

"I have priorities and obligations to people such as my wife and my little boy, and I can't walk away just because someone else does," he added.

The U's board are keen for Carden to remain at the Abbey either as assistant manager or simply as a player and will also consider him for the manager's job, should he apply.

Meanwhile, ahead of Saturday's friendly with West Ham, Carden has confirmed out-of-contract midfielder Daryl McMahon has left the club, along with trialists Rhys Day and Laurie Walker.
