Law admits Cambridge move is bold

Brabin and Carden have both signed two-year deals at the Abbey

Cambridge United chairman Phil Law admits the club's new management pairing of Gary Brabin and Paul Carden is something of a gamble for the club.

Brabin, 37, has had just seven games in charge of Blue Square North side Southport and Paul Carden's assistant manager job is his first in management.

"We could have just gone for a safe pair of hands," Law admitted to BBC Radio Cambridgeshire.

"And maybe six months down the line I'll be rueing that we didn't."

But the club's board believe the pair can bring a fresh approach to the Abbey.

"When you see the two together they bounce off one another, they work very well as a team and it became irresistible," Law said.

However Law is keen to see Cambridge head in a new direction, despite their success in finishing second in the Blue Square Premier under Jimmy Quinn last season.

"Having stabilised the club on and off the park, I think we needed to freshen the approach up," Law said.

"I think we'll see with Gary and Paul a lot more emphasis on the development of the younger players."

Initially it was believed Southport were unhappy with the way in which Cambridge went about discussions with Brabin over a possible move, but that dispute has now been settled.

However Carden had signed a pre-contract agreement with Wrexham ahead of the new season, and the Welsh side are believed to have contacted the FA in order to clarify their position ahead of any further action.
