Taylor hunts European spot
Birmingham's Maik Taylor
Birmingham goalkeeper Maik Taylor has set his sights on qualification for Europe next season.

The club have signed Emile Heskey, Muzzy Izzet, Julian Gray and Mario Melchiot in an effort to prevent a repeat of last season's tailing off.

"After achieving so much early on last season, it was disappointing it went so flat at the end," said Taylor.

"But this time we should have the experience and quality so the European spot would not be out of the question."

And Taylor predicts that the quality of the players coming to St Andrews will help the club maintain their challenge over the whole season.

I can't put my finger on what happened at the end of last season

"The signs are more positive for next season, with more quality having been added to the team during the summer," he added.

"The club have already shown that the ambition is there, with the names that have already come in and the others that are being bandied around."

Birmingham, in their second season in the Premiership, enjoyed a sustained run of good form early in the season, rising as high as fourth before Christmas,

But a return of only five points from the final eight matches led to Birmingham finishing in 10th place.

"I can't put my finger on what happened at the end of last season and certainly it wasn't intentional," admitted Taylor.

"People weren't easing off and thinking of their summer holidays just because we were mathematically safe.

"It's just that in the last eight or nine games nothing really seemed to go to plan for us."
