Barrow have signed Carlisle striker Andy Cook on a free transfer and 23-year-old Wrexham midfielder Christian Smith on a month-long loan deal.

Cook, 20, has signed a two-and-a-half-year deal with the Bluebirds after two successful loan spells.

"It's a position that we needed strengthening," Barrow joint-boss Dave Bayliss told BBC Radio Cumbria.

"We know all about Andy, Carlisle have done us a favour and he's a lad for the future and will play a bit part."

Bayliss added: "It shows that we're building for next season, he's going to an integral part of what we're trying to do next season.

"We've already mentioned that we want to freshen things up in the squad with younger faces, and Andy won't be the only player coming in between now and the end of the season."

Cook came through the Carlisle academy to sign a professional deal at Brunton Park but made just 11 appearances for the club.

"He needs to get some games," Carlisle boss Greg Abbott told the club website.

"We think that the level we're at is probably just a little bit much for him at the moment and he's got to get out and start playing.

"Barrow have given him the opportunity to do that and we've let him go there hoping he'll score goals and get his career kick started.

"We thank him for all his hard work and wish him all the very best for the future."

Cook is joined at the club by 23-year-old Smith, who has played for Port Vale, Cambridge, Northwich, Clyde and York.

He has played for Wrexham and Newport during a loan spell in the Blue Square Bet Premier this season.
