Barnsley paid a fitting tribute to Eric Winstanley by beating a star-studded Manchester United team at Oakwell.

Sir Alex Ferguson put out a side containing several first-teamers, with Dwight Yorke and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer playing in attack and Ryan Giggs on the wing.

The only goal of the game came midway through the second half when veteran midfielder Neil Redfearn scored for the home side.

Barnsley started well and United's rookie keeper Roy Carroll kept out a well-struck shot from Jon Parkin.

Training workout

United then took control and Ryan Giggs saw his effort saved by Andy Marriott.

Yorke then failed to hit the target with Marriott struggling to get back to his goal while Quinton Fortune put a couple of efforts close.

Again Yorke came close to scoring just before the break when his header from Giggs' free kick was turned onto the bar and over by Marriott.

Michael Stewart and Solskjaer also had efforts saved by the Barnsley keeper.

Ferguson rang the changes after the break with Laurent Blanc, Denis Irwin, Fortune and Solskjaer taken off.

Barnsley's winner came on 72 minutes when Redfearn beat substitute keeper Paul Rachubka with a 25-yard effort.

There was little urgency shown by Ferguson's men as they treated the match as a training workout.
