Barnsley confirm Parkin deal
New Barnsley manager Steve Parkin
Steve Parkin turned Rochdale's fortunes around
Steve Parkin has been confirmed as the new manager of Barnsley.

Parkin quits his position as manager of Rochdale to fill the gap left by Nigel Spackman's sacking last month.

Parkin was at Deepdale on Thursday night to see his new side draw 2-2 with Preston North End.

It is a tough job and one which needs to be done quickly

Despite the result, Barnsley remain locked in the First Division's bottom two.

The 36-year-old will take charge of the team for the first time for the home game with Wimbledon on Saturday, 17 November.

Barnsley revealed the appointment at a news conference at Oakwell on Friday.

Parkin has brought Tony Ford, the league's oldest player at 42, from Rochdale as his number two.

Steve's track record is excellent, and he was always the man I wanted

But, while the Tykes were celebrating their new arrival, Rochdale were licking their wounds after losing a manager who has turned the club's fortunes around.

Parkin guided the club into second place in Division Three, but had a clause in his contract allowing him to talk to any club from a higher division.

The clause was inserted into the three-year contract Parkin signed before the start of the 2000/01 season.
