Villa still contenders - Sidwell

Midfielder Steve Sidwell believes that Aston Villa are still genuine contenders to break into the top four in the Premier League this season.

Martin O'Neill's side have lost their first two matches of the campaign against Wigan and Rapid Vienna.

"It's going to be a very tight league, as has been shown by some of the results already," Sidwell told BBC WM.

"I'm sure we'll still be competing and it's important to get our season back on track as quickly as possible."

The likes of Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur have strengthened their squads significantly during the summer.

What better place to get your season back on track than Anfield?

And while Villa have added four new signings, in Stewart Downing, Fabian Delph, Habib Beye and back-up goalkeeper Andy Marshall on a free transfer, they are without the retired Martin Laursen and the departed Gareth Barry this season.

"There's been a lot of progression at other clubs but we've got more than enough to deal with that and contend," added Sidwell.

Villa are away at Liverpool on Monday, and Sidwell knows how difficult it will be to get a result at Anfield following a 5-0 defeat there last season.

"It would be tough going there in good form and full of confidence," said Sidwell.

"We're going there on the back of two defeats, but what better place to get your season back on track than Anfield?"
