Villa facing decision over Barry

Gareth Barry
Barry has had an uncertain summer as he waits to see where his future lies

Aston Villa midfielder Gareth Barry is likely to discover where his future lies on Thursday.

If Villa play Barry, 27, in their Uefa Cup game against FH Hafnarfjordur on Thursday it will mean his proposed switch to Anfield is likely to be over.

The England midfielder would then be cup-tied from playing in Europe for another team until February.

"If he's still our player he has as good a chance as anyone of being on the bus," said Villa boss Martin O'Neill.

Barry came on as a 14th-minute substitute against Odense in the Intertoto Cup third round game.

But an appearance in the Uefa Cup would mean he is ineligible to play for another club in Europe until the last 32 stage.

Barry has made no secret of his desire to leave Villa in order to play Champions League football for the Reds.

But Liverpool have so far refused to pay Villa's 18m asking price for Barry and it has been reported that manager Rafa Benitez has come into conflict with owners George Gillett and Tom Hicks over the move.

Liverpool chief executive Rick Parry denied there was any problems between manager and owners, but stressed the asking price for Barry was too high.
