Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger welcomes Wright

Richard Wright clinched his £6m move to Arsenal from Ipswich and immediately turned up the heat on England goalkeeping colleague David Seaman.

The 23-year-old Wright has reportedly agreed a five-year deal and becomes Arsene Wenger's fourth signing of the summer.

Ipswich-born Wright joined the Portman Road club in 1995, establishing himself as an ever-present.

He is the latest arrival at Highbury after Sol Campbell joined on a Bosman free transfer from local rivals Spurs earlier this week.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst moved south from Rangers in an £8.5m deal while Francis Jeffers signed from Everton for £8m, rising to £10m on appearances.

Wright will now fight for his first-team place in the Gunners line-up with 37-year-old England keeper David Seaman and Alex Manninger.

Seaman has struggled for consistency over the past couple of seasons and must decide whether to renew his contract with Arsenal.

When asked if he could learn from Seaman or whether he was there to take his place, Wright said: "It's a bit of both.

Disappointed

"I can definitely learn from David because he has so much experience and has achieved so much in the game.

"But I want to play first team football. I will be disappointed if I begin the season on the bench.

"I'm not taking anything for granted but I feel I can push David Seaman for the number one position. I think it is good to have challenges in life."

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger admitted that he was facing a dilemma over his choice of goalkeeper.

Wright gave Ipswich plenty to shout about

"I know picking a goalkeeper for our first game of the season will be a tough decision but I accept that," said Wenger.

"The great thing about Seaman is that he accepts that as well.

"David has 15 years of extra knowledge to pass on to Richard and although it is a competitive situation Richard will be able to learn a lot."

Wright's time in East Anglia saw him develop as one of the finest young goalkeepers in English football.

After the heartbreak of three successive play-off final failures, he excelled as Ipswich secured promotion to the Premiership in 2000 and was named in the PFA award-winning First Division side two seasons running.

He made his full international debut a year ago in England's 2-1 friendly win in Malta, conceding two penalties and saving one.

Last season Wright was an integral member of George Burley's Ipswich team which booked a UEFA Cup place with a fifth place finish in the Premiership.
