Andrius Velicka told he has no Aberdeen future

Andrius Velicka celebrates scoring for Aberdeen

On-loan Rangers striker Andrius Velicka has been told he has no future at Aberdeen and is hoping for a switch to Swiss strugglers St Gallen.

The 31-year-old has played just five times for the Dons, and scored once, since arriving during the summer and has not featured since 11 December.

And boss Craig Brown said: "I believe he is off on Thursday to Switzerland and may get a contract there."

Brown this month signed Nick Blackman on loan from Blackburn Rovers.

The manager said of his decision to tell Velicka he can leave: "The thinking behind that is we have recruited Nick Blackman and it puts Andrius down the pecking order a bit."

Velicka had been signed by previous Aberdeen manager Mark McGhee in an exchange deal that took versatile defender Richard Foster to Ibrox in the summer.

Injuries hampered the Lithuania international's career at Ibrox and he has been limited to nine Rangers appearances - and four goals - since arriving for £1m from Viking Stavanger in 2008.

We have targeted a couple of players and hopefully we get one out of two in

Aberdeen manager Craig Brown

He made only one substitute appearance while on loan to Bristol City last season before injury struck again.

And, while Foster has made 12 appearances for Rangers, including three in the Champions League, Velicka's lack of fitness prevented him making his Dons debut until October.

"He has a great scoring record, but he hasn't shown it here and he isn't one of our players," said Brown.

"We have five strikers and I am very pleased with Vernon, Maguire, Magennis, Paton and we also Blackman on loan, so Andrius was down the bottom."

It is believed that Aberdeen could make another two signings before the January transfer window closes.

However, Brown insists he is not too concerned about adding to his squad because of the strength of the club's youth squad.

"We have targeted a couple of players and hopefully we get one out of two in," he said.

"It is not essential, though, it is desirable and I would rather get one useful player in than one for the sake of signing.

"It is important that a club makes no signing rather than a bad signing.

"And, having watched the under-19s, I feel reassured that, if we don't get our targeted players, we would not be too bad off.

"They look exceptional and we could promote them."
