Hibs boost after European mix-up
Hibs celebrate a goal at Easter Road
Hibs qualified for Europe via a third place finish
Hibernian have been given a Uefa Cup lift due to Liverpool's promotion to the Champions League.

Hibs and Dundee United were both due to enter at the second qualifying stage but the Easter Road side will now go into the final round.

However, the Scottish Football Association blundered and told United that they were the team to benefit.

The SFA has apologised to the Scottish Cup runners-up and third-placed Hibs enter the tournament at the later date.

United say they were told twice over the phone by the SFA that they would be in the final qualifying round and that the news could be communicated publicly.

A fax bearing the incorrect information was also sent and received and the club made an announcement on their official website.

A Tannadice spokesman said: "To put it mildly, this is something of a shambles and an embarrassment and Dundee United are not amused that this has happened.

"We accept that rules are rules but did expect that the advice of the governing body would be based on a full and intimate knowledge of the rules."

United will learn on 29 July the identity of the team that will stand in their way of the first round and then play that team home and away on 11 August and 25 August.

Hibs will play their first game on 15 September, having learned on 26 August who they are to play.

Liverpool won last season's Champions League but, because they finished out of the Premiership's top four, were not guaranteed entry to the competition in 2005-2006.

But Uefa's executive committee changed its rules on Friday to allow Liverpool in.

As a result, Liverpool have been withdrawn from the Uefa Cup and there will be one less English team in the tournament, which has resulted in Hibs being bumped up the qualifying order.
