Swearing ref Dougal fined
Referee Stuart Dougal
Christian Nerlinger defended referee Stuart Dougal
Top referee Stuart Dougal has been given an unprecedented fine and reprimand for swearing at Rangers midfielder Christian Nerlinger.

A Scottish FA spokesman said: "The committee decided that Mr Dougal should be fined 200 and severely censured.

"The committee interviewed Mr Dougal and decided that he had been guilty of using foul language."

Dougal, who was caught on BBC cameras during a league match against Partick Thistle, is considering an appeal.

"I'm very disappointed by what has happened," Dougal said.

"A fine of 200 and an official censure amounts to a double punishment in my eyes.

"I accept I may have used language unbecoming of a referee and I was not surprised to be called in front of the disciplinary committee.

"The support from my fellow referees and those within the game has been almost humbling," he added.

Dougal, who will be a fourth official at the European Championship in Portugal this summer, does not fear for his career.

Both Nerlinger and Rangers manager Alex McLeish said at the time that they did not think that Dougal should be disciplined.

The German player insisted that he had not heard any swearing.
