Dundee Utd 1-1 Rangers

Bottom club Dundee United claimed only their seventh SPL point of the season in a result that undermined Rangers' already ambitious quest to catch Old Firm rivals Celtic in the title race.

United's hero was debutant Derek Lilley who cancelled out Claudio Reyna's strike to net his first goal for his new club and give manager Alex Smith a much-needed boost.

Rangers had threatened to over-run their opponents in a breathless first-half but were undone by another costly mistake by erratic central defender Lorenzo Amoruso.

His hesitancy at the back allowed Beto Naveda to steal in and set new team-mate Lilley up for his glory goal.

Sublime strike

It took both sides time to settle but Rangers soon had a flurry of chances starting in the 11th minute when Michael Mols headed straight at Alan Combe in the United goal.

Barry Ferguson and Tony Vidmar both had efforts before United were eventually punished after 18 minutes.

It was Claudio Reyna who celebrated his recent nomination for US Player of the Year with a sublime strike.

Mols was the creator, setting up his colleague for a sweetly struck shot that flew high in to the corner of the net - leaving Combe with no chance.

The breakthrough only led to further assaults on United's goal as Vidmar and then de Boer tried their luck, the Dutchman with an outrageous free-kick that clipped the woodwork.

This was strictly one-way traffic and all the more surprising when United levelled on 32 minutes.

Lorenzo Amoruso was caught dithering with the ball near his own penalty area and Beto Naveda caught the gaffe-prone Italian defender out.

Naveda quickly set up debutant Lilley for a superb shot which streaked past Stefan Klos for his first club goal, one that left the travelling support in a collective state of shock.

The teams emerged after the interval with the Rangers players probably still wondering why they were not holding any kind of lead over their opponents.

United fared better in the second-half though, managing to frustrate the Rangers attacks while posing a threat themselves.

Former Ibrox man Charlie Miller had an opportunity with a free-kick from 25 yards but Klos saved well.

At the opposite end, Neil McCann was guilty of a woeful miss when he headed Fernando Ricksen's cross wide of the upright with the goal gaping.

New Tannadice goalscoring hero Lilley was removed by boss Alex Smith on 80 minutes to appreciative applause from the home fans as the countdown to the full-time whistle promised to be frantic.

Advocaat introduced Jorg Albertz in a final throw of the dice and there was a look of disbelief on the face of Ferguson when his header came crashing off the bar, United saved by the woodwork once more.
