Dunfermline 0-0 St Johnstone
Dunfermline striker Tam McManus shows his frustration
Dunfermline striker Tam McManus was left frustrated
Dunfermline failed to break down St Johnstone in a goalless draw that leaves both pre-season title favourites in the wrong half of Division One.

Owen Morrison fired an unstoppable drive past Saints goalkeeper Alan Main, but Steven Anderson cleared off the goalline after nine minutes.

Kevin Harper sent a low drive just wide as the Pars dominated possession.

Saints' Paul Sheerin blasted over the bar from six yards in the dying seconds after being found unmarked in the box.

It was relief at the end for Dunfermline, but losing two points was still another blow to their hopes of winning promotion immediately after dropping down from the Scottish Premier League.

Dunfermline captain Scott Thomson hobbles off injured
Pars captain Scott Thomson's injury jinx struck again

To make matters worse for the home side, captain Scott Thomson, pulled up injured just before half-time.

The veteran defender, who has been plagued with injury in recent seasons and had just returned to the side, was replaced with Stephen Simmons.

Sunday's draw leaves Dunfermline in sixth place on five points, 10 adrift of early pacesetters Hamilton Academical.

The result did nothing either to ease pressure on Saints manager Owen Coyle, whose side sit a point further back after four draws in their opening five league games.

Despite the addition of Gretna striker Kenny Deuchar and Celtic's attacking midfielder, Rocco Quinn, both signed on loan last week, the Perth side rarely threatened Paul Gallacher in the Pars' goal.
