Wales to host Sweden in friendly

Wales badge

Wales have confirmed they will host 1958 World Cup runners-up Sweden in a March friendly at the Liberty Stadium.

The Swedes visit Swansea on Wednesday, 3 March hoping to extend their five-match winning run against the Welsh.

Wales have not yet won at the Liberty Stadium, losing once and drawing twice, since it opened in 2005.

The Wales match is a boost for Liberty Stadium chiefs as they feared being overlooked for internationals after the FAW hosted a game in Llanelli in 2009.

Parc y Scarlets staged Wales' 1-0 win over Estonia in May last year but the Football Association of Wales has revealed Swansea will host its first Wales game for 18 months in March.

Visitors Sweden - who, like Wales, failed to qualify for the 2010 World Cup finals - are ranked 42 in the world and are 35 places above Wales in the official Fifa rankings.

The first meeting between Wales and Sweden was a goalless draw in the pool stages in Solna in the only Welsh World Cup appearance in 1958.

This will be the sixth meeting between the two sides, the first being in the World Cup Finals in Sweden of 1958. That game was drawn 0-0. Since then Wales have been convincingly beaten in every friendly.
