Southampton   1 - 2   Birmingham

Birmingham survived a scare to come from behind against League One side Southampton and book their place in the Carling Cup third round.

Southampton dominated as Adam Lallana opened the scoring with a curling effort from outside the area.

But Lee Bowyer equalised for the Premier League side when he latched on to a deft Christian Benitez through-ball before chipping over Kelvin Davis.

And Lee Carsley slotted the winner from inside the area to avoid an upset.


Southampton manager Alan Pardew told BBC Radio Solent:

"It's a shame for us because we played terrific tonight, we really deserved to win that game.

"I thought the referee didn't help us at all. I thought we had two or three penalty claims. The crowd were upset with him and quite rightly so.

"We got the balance right and I honestly feel we would have won that game if we hadn't had an injury to [Graeme] Murty."

Birmingham boss Alex McLeish:

"It helps confidence and creates good habits, winning in the cup.

"The performance I'm not entirely pleased with but I didn't expect it to be smooth - we made a lot of changes and rotated the squad.

"But we soldiered on. When we went behind I thought we were going out of the cup. But I felt we had goals in us.

"If we'd gone two behind Southampton would have seen it through. But we got a lot stronger.

"It was a classic Bowyer goal, and Carsley has played a captain's role and got the winner."
