Bradford City 0-0 Darlington

(aet - Darlington win 5-3 on penalties)

Glen Robson scored the winning penalty to give Darlington victory in a penalty shoot-out against Bradford in the Carling Cup.

Tom Kearney missed the crucial spot-kick which sunk Bradford 5-3 in the shoot-out after both sides had failed to score throughout normal and extra time.

Darlington's Ryan Valentine was the first man to find the target in the match with a low 20-yard shot that was easily saved.

Craig Liddle was desperately unlucky not to give the visitors a deserved 15th-minute lead when his close-range header from Valentine's free-kick clattered the crossbar.

Bantams goalkeeper Mark Paston rescued his team again when he bravely blocked an Ashley Nicholls shot after the former Ipswich man had been sent clean through by Barry Conlon.

Darlington continued to attack in the second half, with Robson denied a point-blank opportunity only by a last-ditch interception by Simon Francis.

And immediately afterwards Conlon's effort from deep inside the box was blocked by David Wetherall and strenuous penalty appeals were waved away.

Bradford eventually started to pressurise the Darlington goal and Wetherall narrowly missed with a header after 60 minutes.

Paul Evans then hit a strong 30-yard drive which was well saved by Michael Price.

Robson had the first clear chance of the extra period when he flicked Valentine's right-wing cross against the crossbar with home keeper Paston beaten.

Conlon was also unlucky when he stabbed the ball goalwards in a crowded box only for Gareth Edds to clear with Paston again nowhere.

But with neither side able to break the deadlock the game went to penalties.
