Newry City v Linfield

Keeper Andy Colman saves two Linfield penalties as Newry make it into the Co-operative Insurance Cup quarter-finals

Double winners Linfield are out of the Co-operative Insurance Cup after losing a penalty shoot-out at Newry City.

Linfield scored in the 19th minute through an acrobatic shot by Michael Gault after a Curtis Allen corner.

City levelled six minutes before half-time when Alan Davidson followed up after Cullen Feeney's shot was saved.

In the shoot-out, Jamie Tomlety had a chance to put Linfield through but Andy Coleman saved and also kept out Jamie Mulgrew's kick to snatch Newry's win.

Newry had an early advantage in the penalty shoot-out when Francis Murphy scored and Jim Ervin saw his attempt saved.

Ross Black netted for Newry but John Convery missed and Matt Hazley's effort was saved, allowing Linfield to seize the initiative through Chris Casement, Paul Munster and Peter Thompson.

Newry's last two penalties were converted by Alan Davidson and former Linfield player Conor Hagan.

"It is the first time as a manager I have beaten one of the top two," said Newry manager Gerry Flynn.

"It is not every day you knock out the champions. It was a great team performance."
