West Brom's Steven Reid quits Republic of Ireland duty

Republic of Ireland midfielder Steven Reid has retired from international football to concentrate on his club career at West Brom.

Reid, 29, secured a two-year contract at West Brom in May after helping the club achieve promotion to the Premier League during a two-month loan spell.

The injury-plagued former Millwall and Blackburn player won 23 Irish caps after making his debut in 2001.

"I've taken this decision to prolong my club career," said Reid.

"Having weighed everything up, I know this is the right decision.

"The injuries I've had over the past couple of years have been well documented.

"It's a decision I came to after lengthy discussions with the club's medical staff and my family.

"I've had some unforgettable times with Ireland, the highlight being making two appearances at the World Cup Finals in Japan and South Korea in 2002 and it has always been a huge honour for me to wear the Irish jersey.

"It's just a shame my injuries cut short the number of caps I possibly could have won over the past few years."

Reid made his Republic debut against Croatia in August 2001 and he went on to play for Mick McCarthy's side in the World Cup finals a year later.

The midfielder went on to earn caps during the subsequent reigns of Brian Kerr, Steve Staunton and current boss Giovanni Trapattoni.

Reid captained the Republic against the Netherlands in 2006 and Trapattoni on Tuesday paid tribute to the player's "tremendous commitment to the Irish jersey".

"On behalf of the Irish team, we wish Steven well for his future and we thank him for his outstanding commitment," added Trapattoni.

London-born Reid joined Blackburn from Millwall for £2.5m in 2003, but injury problems ruled him out of much of the 2006-07 season and the whole of 2008-09.

He was unable to force himself into Rovers manager Sam Allardyce's first team at Ewood Park on a regular basis last season and as well as being loaned to West Brom, also spent a brief spell with QPR.

Reid held talks with Celtic before opting to sign his two-year deal at the Hawthorns.
