Donegal Celtic boss Pat McAllister has shocked the club by quitting the job.

Only last month, McAllister guided the club into next season's Carling Irish Premiership after a play-off victory over Institute.

However, club chairman Raymond Bonner told BBC Sport on Tuesday night that McAllister had stepped down for "personal reasons".

The Donegal Celtic official was unable to elaborate on McAllister's reasons for the shock decision.

Earlier this month, McAllister, 37, verbally agreed a new deal to remain as manager of the newly-promoted club although Bonner said that the Belfast man had not signed any contract.

"We're very sad to see Pat go. It is an absolute bombshell," added Bonner.

"He said that he had to step down because of personal reasons - nothing to do with football - and we had to accept that, shake his hand, and wish him all the best for the future.

"I did try everything to get him to stay but we had to accept his decision."

The club now faces the task of finding a new manager ahead of the start of the Irish Premiership season on 7 August.

In the short-term, the club's director of football and boss prior to McAllister, Paddy Kelly may take interim charge.
