Glentoran have won the race for the signature of Coleraine striker Rory Patterson, with the forward having signed up to a pre-contract agreement.

The Irish League's leading goalscorer is believed to have held talks with both the Glens and Belfast rivals Linfield but opted to move to the Oval.

The 25-year-old forward will join the east Belfast outfit on a three-year contract in the summer.

Patterson has scored 23 goals for the Bannsiders already this season.

Patterson confirmed to the BBC that he had agreed to move to the Glens.

"I was impressed by how much Glentoran wanted me to join them and it was not about money.

"I had offers from Scotland as well but I felt the Glens was the best way forward for me at this stage of my career.

"I can understand the Coleraine supporters feeling aggrieved but I will continue to do my job for the club as long as I am with them.

"Some of the stick I took at Seaview was quite bad but you just have to deal with it," said Patterson.

Coleraine boss David Platt said he was disappointed to lose his star forward, with the Showgrounds club having made an improved offer to the player last week.

"We did our best to keep Rory at the club but as far as I am concerned he is a Coleraine player until the end of the season and we want to see him scoring many more goals," said Platt.
