Nigel Worthington will lead NI through the 2012 European qualifying campaign

Nigel Worthington is expected to sign a new deal next week to stay on as Northern Ireland manager.

After lengthy negotiations between Worthington and Irish FA president Raymond Kennedy, BBC Sport understands that an agreement has been reached.

The former Sheffield Wednesday defender was appointed NI manager in the summer of 2007 and the new contract will take him through the Euro 2012 qualifiers.

Worthington said he hoped the deal would be finalised soon.

"Negotiations take time but hopefully it will all be put to bed next week," said the NI manager.

"Then we can look forward to getting on with the job in hand.

"The situation never arose where I spoke to anybody else."

Worthington is currently out of contract and media stories have linked him with a possible move to Sheffield Wednesday.

When negotiations on a new contract began, it was believed there was a major gap between the parties.

However, further talks took place this week and it is understood Worthington and Kennedy have agreed on a new contract, but the details will have to be approved by the Irish FA's board next week.
