Linfield 6-0 Glentoran
Linfield's Paul McAreavey
The superb Paul McAreavey scored two goals for Linfield
Linfield humiliated 10-man Glentoran 6-0 to win their Setanta Cup group and set up a semi-final against Drogheda United next Tuesday.

Andrew Hunter's 25th minute penalty put the Blues ahead and after Mark Glendinning's dismissal, Peter Thompson hit Linfield's second before the break.

Paul McAreavey's delightful lob made it 3-0 and further goals followed from William Murphy, McAreavey and Thompson.

Derry's late goal at Tolka Park ensured that Linfield avoided the trip to Cork.

Linfield made the better start at Windsor but Glentoran came more into the game around the 10th minute mark and Blues goalkeeper Alan Mannus had to move smartly to tip a looping Darren Lockhart header over the bar.

Willo McDonagh then got into a dangerous position for the Glens but he, unwisely, went for goal from a tight angle rather than trying to pick out a colleague in the Linfield box.

Linfield's opener came from the Hunter's 25th minute spot-kick after Lockhart had been adjudged to have hauled down McAreavey in the area.

Lockhart had earlier been booked and he appeared fortunate not to be given an early bath at that stage.

Oran Kearney then squandered a couple of great chances for Linfield but the home team's task was made considerably easier when Glendinning received a straight red-card in the 40th minute after a dreadful tackle on Tim Mouncey.

Within a minute of Glendinning's departure, the Blues were 2-0 ahead with Thompson stabbing home from close range after both he and McAreavey had seen efforts pinball back off the woodwork.

McAreavey made it 3-0 with a magnificent lobbed finish after his own superb first touch to bring the ball under control in the 56th minute.

Murphy's free-header made it 4-0 on 62 minutes and the rout was completed by further goals from McAreavey (82) and Thompson (90).

Thompson's second goal came after a howler from Elliott Morris who somehow managed to spill an aimless through ball.
