Phil Charnock's spell at Ballymena United could be over after the midfielder was ruled out for the rest of the season.

The former Liverpool and Linfield player suffered a hamstring injury in last Wednesday's Irish Cup defeat to Lisburn Distillery at the Showgrounds.

Charnock joined United in October and his contract with the Sky Blues runs out at the end of the current campaign.

His time at Ballymena has been plagued by a series of injuries.

"Phil is one of football's real gentlemen and I am really disappointed for him," United boss Tommy Wright told the News Letter.

"When fit, he would be the best midfielder in the Irish League.

"I felt for him, he was really down on Wednesday night after picking up a hamstring injury.

"It would perhaps be better for him to rest for the remainder of the term and to complete a pre-season training programme."

Wright is also likely to be without striker Darren Fitzgerald for the remainder of the season.

The former Glentoran and Ards player is recovering from a cruciate ligament injury.
