Former Manchester United and Republic of Ireland defender Paul McGrath has taken up a new job with Eircom League club Waterford United.

McGrath has been appointed director of football at Waterford who play in the Premier Division.

Alan Reynolds has returned to Waterford to be player-manager at just 29.

"I am so glad to have a person of Paul's calibre at United. Everybody here is thrilled at the appointment," said club chairman Ger O'Brien.

McGrath won 83 caps for Ireland between 1985 and 1997 and played more than 550 club games for Manchester United, Aston Villa, Derby County and Sheffield United.

"I hope I can lead Waterford United to the success that the club deserves," McGrath told the FAI's website.

"I am thrilled to be back involved in football and I cannot wait to get stuck into the job."

Waterford finished sixth on their return to the top flight last season.
