Doyle out of Republic qualifier

Kevin Doyle has been ruled out of the Republic of Ireland's crucial World Cup qualifier against Bulgaria on 6 June.

Doyle has failed to recover from the calf strain which ruled him out of several recent Reading games.

With Doyle missing, Hull striker Caleb Folan is in line to partner Robbie Keane up front in Sofia.

Folan will miss Friday's game against Nigeria at Craven Cottage because of a knee injury but he is expected to be fit for the World Cup qualifier.

That means that Coventry striker Leon Best is in the frame to start against Nigeria.

"Caleb will be okay after the rest, and on Monday he will be with us," Trapattoni said.

"I also have Leon Best. He is a different player but he is a similar build and can play that way."

Trapattoni is set to field an inexperienced side at Craven Cottage.

Manchester City goalkeeper Shay Given has a hip injury but would have been rested anyway to give Keiren Westwood a chance, while Preston pair Sean St Ledger and Eddie Nolan are also set for debuts.

Stoke's Liam Lawrence is also expected to make his first senior appearance - although he has been in previous Republic squads.

Lawrence planned to be in Las Vegas celebrating Stoke's Premier League survival - but he is happy to swap his holiday for a chance at getting his country closer to next year's World Cup.

"I didn't think it was going to come but I've been playing every week and doing well," said Lawrence.

"It's given me a chance and hopefully I'll take it. The bar is raised again and it is up for me to step up.

The 27-year-old earns his first involvement in Trapattoni's reign after impressing in Stoke's Premier League survival campaign.

Preston duo Nolan and St Ledger are also included along with Coventry City striker Best but there is still no place for Sunderland midfielder Andy Reid.

The squad will be reduced to 22 for the World Cup qualifier against Bulgaria in Sofia the following weekend.

Alex Bruce, Damien Delaney, Steve Finnan, Darren O'Dea and Noel Hunt are missing from the squad initially named for the last two qualifiers against Bulgaria and Italy.

Republic of Ireland squad: Shay Given (Manchester City), Dean Kiely (West Brom), Kieren Westwood (Coventry), Eddie Nolan, Sean St Ledger (both Preston), John O'Shea (Manchester United), Kevin Foley (Wolves), Paul McShane (Sunderland), Richard Dunne (Manchester City), Stephen Kelly (Birmingham), Kevin Kilbane (Hull); Aiden McGeady (Celtic), Damien Duff (Newcastle), Darron Gibson (Manchester United), Glenn Whelan (Stoke), Keith Andrews (Blackburn), Liam Miller (QPR), Stephen Hunt (Reading), Andy Keogh (Wolves), Liam Lawrence (Stoke); Caleb Folan (Hull), Robbie Keane (Tottenham), Shane Long (Reading), Leon Best (Coventry).
