England-Scotland rematch on hold

England v Scotland

A friendly between England and Scotland has been ruled out until at least 2010.

England wanted to resurrect the world's oldest international rivalry at Wembley in May but Scotland boss George Burley decided the timing was not right.

And when the Football Association met Fabio Capello last week to draw up plans for 2009, the England boss ruled out a match against the Scots in 2009.

"I don't envisage us playing Scotland over the next year," said FA director of communications Adrian Bevington.

England and Scotland, along with fellow home nations Wales and Northern Ireland, failed to qualify for Euro 2008 in Austria and Switzerland this summer.

And plans for a Four Nations tournament involving Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales and Republic of Ireland have been put back to 2011 because of fixture congestion.

However, Scottish FA chief executive Gordon Smith has been pushing for a fixture against England since his appointment in June 2007.

We fully appreciate the level of interest an England-Scotland fixture would generate

Bevington added: "As Gordon Smith has said, there is certainly a desire on our part to find a suitable date to arrange a fixture with Scotland in the future.

"However, we won't be in a position to do so for quite some time. We were of course ready to host Scotland next month, following previous positive conversations, but unfortunately Scotland were unable to take up that fixture.

"We fully appreciate the level of interest an England-Scotland fixture would generate and of course it's something we will be discussing further with Gordon Smith and the Scottish FA."

Scotland and England have not played each other since their Euro 2000 play-off in 1999, when England lost the second leg 1-0 but won 2-1 on aggregate.

They also met at Wembley during Euro 96, when England won 2-0, but prior to that encounter their previous meeting came at Hampden in 1989.

"There is a willingness on both side to resurrect the fixture," said BBC Five Live sports news correspondent Gordon Farquar.

"The FA says its chief executive Brian Barwick and his counterpart at the Scottish FA have been discussing this informally.

"I understand there is no prospect of anything happening next season, however, there is a chance it could be back on in 2010.

"Don't hold your breath as nothing has been decided yet but it is a possibility that in a couple of years we could have England v Scotland again."

Scottish FA chief executive confirmed: "I've had discussions with Brian Barwick about resurrecting the Scotland v England games and it's definitely back on.

"It might be 2010 before we get a game.

"The idea would be to establish some sort of relationship for one-off games or even have them biannually."
