Robson wanted England U21s role
Former Middlesbrough and West Brom boss Bryan Robson

Former West Brom boss Bryan Robson has revealed he was interested in becoming the England Under-21 manager.

Manchester City boss Stuart Pearce was given the job on a part-time basis on 1 February and will step down after this summer's European championships.

Robson told Five Live: "I did have an interest in the job on a full-time basis. Appointing a part-time coach was a strange decision by the FA."

England will take part in the European U21 championships from 1 to 23 June.

Robson has been out of work since he parted company with West Brom in September 2006 after 22 months in charge at The Hawthorns - but he is keen on a return to management.

He added: "I have just got to wait and see what opportunities become available, if any, for the challenge that I want."

Robson is adamant, though, that the under-21 position should be full-time.

"The Football Association came out not long ago and said from the under-11s up to the under-21s, the manager's position was going to be a full-time role and I feel that is the way it should be," he said.

"As the manager of a Premiership club do you have enough time to go and scout all the players? No you don't. So you are relying on other people's opinion of how players are performing.

"Also, watching opposition teams - as a Premiership manager have you got enough time? I don't think you have.

"Or there might be a little gem that you come across as you go around the country watching games in the lead-up to the championships if you have the time to do so."
