Robinho goal sees Brazil progress

All the latest news from the Copa America in Venezuela.

Robinho celebrates scoring for Brazil
Robinho has scored all Brazil's goals at the Copa America
Robinho scored the only goal of the match as Brazil defeated Ecuador to qualify for the quarter-finals of the Copa America in Venezuela.

Robinho, who notched a hat-trick in their 3-0 win over Chile, scored from the penalty spot after 56 minutes.

The Real Madrid player had gone down under a challenge from Giovanny Espinoza - and the Ecuador players were visibly irritated by the decision to award a penalty.

After defeat to Mexico in their opening match, Brazil won their final two group games to finish on six points and claim second place in the group while Ecuador ended their campaign pointless.

  • Brazil coach Dunga:
"The team depends on all the players.

"If you look at the game against Chile, you'll see that Vagner Love won the penalty, Vagner Love set up the second goal and was involved in the third, so it's not just Robinho.

"We never played for a draw. We scored the first goal and were still trying to score goals in the 88th minute.

"We didn't really get going until the last 20 minutes of the first half. It's very difficult for Brazil because the other teams close up against us."

Mexico and Chile contested a dour goalless draw as both teams progressed through from the group stage.

Mexico finished top of Group B with seven points, while Chile claimed third place with four points.

The top two teams in the three first-round groups qualify for the last eight along with the two best third-placed sides.

But the combination of results in Group B means that there is very little to be decided in the final round of games in Group C.

The United States and Colombia go into their final Group C match without any points - and now know they have no chance of claiming qualification through a third-placed finish.

The only issue to be decided in Group C is in which order Argentina and Paraguay will finish in the group.

Both Mexico and Chile were booed from the field after their drab draw - the second goalless match of the tournament.

Chile will now play Brazil in their quarter-final in Puerto La Cruz on Saturday.

The losers of the match between Argentina and Paraguay will play Mexico in Maturin on Sunday.

  • Mexico coach Hugo Sanchez:
"We didn't want to get caught in Chile's trap and play the type of game they wanted.

"I don't know if they really wanted to win. We wanted to win but it's difficult to attack against a team like Chile who are looking after their interests."

  • Chile coach Nelson Acosta:
"We wanted to win the game but, of course, we took precautions as we didn't want to leave ourselves open to the counter-attack.

"We qualified and that is what is important. Football depends a lot upon the moment.

"I don't think the Chilean fans would have been very happy if we'd lost 5-0 and got knocked out."
