Duo reject call-up to Dutch squad
Van Nistelrooy got few opportunities to shine in the World Cup
Van Nistelrooy got few opportunities to shine in the World Cup
Ruud van Nistelrooy and Mark van Bommel have rejected call-ups to the Holland squad for the Euro 2008 qualifiers with Bulgaria and Albania on 7-11 October.

Van Bommel was named in the original squad, despite coach Marco van Basten saying after the World Cup that the midfielder had no international future.

Real Madrid striker Van Nistelrooy was called up as a replacement for the injured Klaas Jan Huntelaar.

The Dutch Football Association (KNVB) says the duo turned down Van Basten.

"Van Bommel does not want to play for Holland any more under the current coaching staff," a statement said.

Van Basten made a phone call to Van Nistelrooy over the weekend in a bid to bring him into the squad.

It was another surprising move, considering that the ex-Manchester United forward, who was used sparingly in the World Cup, had recently criticised the national coaching staff.

The KNVB statement continued: "After the telephone contact it became clear that both the technical staff of Oranje and Van Nistelrooy lack the confidence that the striker can be added to the group as a replacement for Huntelaar."

Van Basten said that no players would be called up to replace Van Bommel and Huntelaar.
