Mooney scored twice in the first round win against Bradford

David Mooney scored for Colchester as they edged out gritty Zamaretto Premier side Swindon Supermarine and progressed to the third round of the FA Cup.

The home side took the lead when Ian Henderson crossed for Mooney, who ran in at the far post to slot home.

Jamie Gosling went close to an equaliser for Marine but saw his curled effort hit the post and bounce clear.

The visitors also had chances through Chris Allen, Ben Wells and Leigh Henry, but United held on for the win.

Colchester United manager John Ward told BBC Essex:
"It is an FA Cup tie and if we get the draw I am talking about - going away to a big one - we want to make it a tough for them one.

"This is no more than I expected and this was their (Swindon Supermarine) big moment and they played above themselves.

"We have had to fight really hard and show what we're about as we said in the build-up that we wanted to get into the third round."

Swindon Supermarine manager Mark Collier told BBC Wiltshire:
"We're disappointed, we think we've done enough to get a draw. In the second-half we've taken the game to them.

"It's hard to take but we're very, very proud. Credit to everybody.

"We've had a fantastic route through and the story has come to an end but we still have a long season ahead of us."
