Europa League review

Diego Forlan celebrates
Atletico Madrid will face Everton's conquerors Sporting Lisbon in the next round

Diego Forlan scored a last-minute winner as Atletico Madrid beat Galatasaray to reach the last 16 in a dramatic night of Europa League action.

Jose Antonio Reyes set up Forlan to seal a 2-1 win on the night and 3-2 on aggregate.

Panathinaikos also claimed a notable scalp by completing a second 3-2 win over Roma to advance 6-4 on aggregate with former Liverpool and Bolton striker Djibril Cisse scoring twice for the Greeks, either side of Sotiris Ninis' strike in the final five minutes of the first half.

Another ex-Red, defender John Arne Riise, and Daniele De Rossi scored Roma's goals but it was not enough for the Italian side.

Juventus drew 0-0 with Ajax to claim a 2-1 aggregate win and set up a clash with Fulham.

Juve were the better side. Mohamed Sissoko hit a post with a header while Giorgio Chiellini and Nicola Legrottaglie both saw headers cleared off the line but a goalless draw was enough for the Italian team.

Lille will be next up for Liverpool after beating Fenerbahce 3-2 on aggregate following a 1-1 draw in the second leg in Turkey.

Emre Belozoglu's first-half strike would have seen Fener progress on away goals, with the tie locked at 2-2, but Adil Rami popped up four minutes from time to reward Lille's pressure.

Steve McClaren's FC Twente crashed out after losing 4-1 in the second leg at Werder Bremen and 4-2 on aggregate while Wolfsburg beat Villarreal by the same score to secure an impressive 6-3 aggregate win.

Hamburg saw off PSV Eindhoven on away goals after a dramatic finish. The Dutch side trailed 1-0 from the game in Germany but took the lead courtesy of goals from Ola Toivonen and Balasz Dzsudzsak.

Mladen Petric and Piotr Trochowski then put Hamburg back on top and Danny Koevermans' last-minute header and a 3-2 win on the night was not enough for the hosts.

Brugge took Valencia to extra time in Spain but two goals in the extra 30 minutes from Hernandez Pablo saw the Spanish side seal a place in the next round with a 3-1 win on aggregate.

Anderlecht produced a superb second-leg display to beat Athletic Bilbao 4-0, and 5-1 on aggregate.

Romelu Lukaku's strike gave them a fourth-minute lead which was extended by Mikel San Jose's own goal, with second-half strikes from Mbark Boussoufa and Jonathan Legear putting the gloss on the result.

Marseille beat FC Copenhagen 3-1 for the second week in a row, while Standard Liege went through 3-2 on aggregate after a goalless draw at Salzburg.

Another 0-0 draw between Hapoel Tel-Aviv and Rubin Kazan saw the Russian side progress following their 3-0 win in the first leg.

Benfica were already through after sealing their place with a 4-0 win over Hertha Berlin on Tuesday night to round off a 5-1 win on aggregate.
